In Malawi, Africa, some boys ran up to our car window and cheerfully asked if we wanted to buy rats on a stick. They held the tasty treats up for us to see. I didn’t want to try them. Would you? One of my favorite memories of Malawi involves our missionary friends’ young daughter. She and several Malawian children sat on the ground – dirt – and ate nsima with their fingers. She was the only blond, fair-skinned, blue-eyed child sitting there. She stood out in that circle of children, but she didn’t notice. It was all very natural for her. Her brothers were not in that circle at that moment. Nsima is mush made from corn, a staple in many African countries. We did try goat entrails – innards – while we were there. I love my hamburgers. See photo below. It’s an example of Malawian children whom I found to be happy, lovable, and precious.
