During a Malawian church service, five women sang and danced respectfully. As they danced in unison, one lady led out the singing of each phrase and the rest echoed her. That’s their typical style of singing. Usually the worship was a cappella, but sometimes a bongo drum accompanied them. Watch by clicking on This videoContinue reading “Malawian Singing and Dancing”

Would you dress like the lady in the photo in Malawi, Africa?
In Malawian villages, women are expected to wear long dresses with their shoulders covered. When we were there in 2009, only “ladies of the night” wore shorts or trousers and tank tops. Even the men didn’t wear shorts. Public displays of affection can be offensive to them, and swearing is frowned upon. You don’t seeContinue reading “Would you dress like the lady in the photo in Malawi, Africa?”
Which is cooler: a brick building or a straw hut?
You’d think a brick building would be cooler than a straw hut, right? Bricks bake under Malawi’s hot sun, retaining, and radiating the heat. It’s stifling inside. In a village, you find homes built of brick and others of straw. It seems the poorer villagers live in straw huts. But a cooling breeze blows throughContinue reading “Which is cooler: a brick building or a straw hut?”
Children run to you in excitement.
As a friendly greeting sometimes you give a quick rub to a child’s head. I did that to one girl in a group of smiling children in Malawi. The others leaned their head toward me so that I would rub their head too. One by one. The children are so precious. You would think thatContinue reading “Children run to you in excitement.”
Amazing African Women
It’s remarkable to balance a water pot on your head while you walk. But add a wiggly baby on your back wrapped around you on a hot day . . . Wow! One of my favorite memories of Malawi involves our missionary friends’ young daughter. SheContinue reading “Yum!”
Do Hyenas Laugh?
Do African hyena’s laugh? They sound like they do. Many of their vocalizations are scary especially at night in the bush. Female hyenas have similar looking reproductive organs as males which makes it difficult to tell what sex they are. They often hunt in packs, are vicious, and equipped with good night vision. The hyenaContinue reading “Do Hyenas Laugh?”

How I Choose Locations
Answer to a question of how I choose locations. They say to write about what you know. I know Auburn, Wenatchee, and Okanogan, Washington. I have visited Malawi, Scotland, Ireland, and the other places I wrote about, but for me “Trapped” required a lot of research on Northern Ireland. I find other countries and culturesContinue reading “How I Choose Locations”
What would you like me to post about?
In book one, The Captive, Beth visited orphanages. In Africa when she saw their trucks, she smiled. “Is it a game to see how much they could pile on their trucks without tipping over?” They do things differently in this part of Africa. I decided to move onto book one and two of my Taken Trilogy.Continue reading “What would you like me to post about?”
