Settings & Behind the Scenes

College freshmen, Beth and her friend, Emily, were in line at Auburn’s US Bank when three men burst in and robbed the bank.

The thieves grabbed the money and kidnapped Beth, Emily and Kathrin. They bound and blindfolded the girls and then drove to parts unknown—at least to the girls.

Kidnapper, Luke, had lied to his son, Glenn, asking him to prepare their horses for a hunting party. So when the men and their hostages met up with Glenn, it was a shock to him. They coerced Glenn into helping them escape justice.

The men rode double with the girls into the high mountains until dark. In this photo, Beth is riding with Glenn.

The victims were held hostage in Glenn’s remote mountain cabin.

While Beth, Emily and Kathrin struggled to survive in north-central Washington’s wilderness, Beth worked hard to keep her growing attraction to the handsome cowboy hidden.

The kidnappers tried to cross the Canadian border near Nighthawk, Washington.

After a while, the hostages were rescued, and the world discovered Beth’s secret. Experts claimed that Beth was feeling nothing more than capture-bonding, not real love. Glenn was out of her reach, so she had to move on.

Four years later…
World Relief sent Beth to Malawi, Africa as a field adviser. Maybe this was her chance at a new life.

Beth couldn’t help but smile when she saw Malawian trucks. She wondered if it was “a game to see how much they could pile on their trucks without tipping over.”

One night, Beth was constrained to sleep in a hut among strangers out in the African bush.

There Beth met Andrew, a young missionary, but memories of Glenn were reignited in her heart.

Would Beth be able to start a new life, or would Glenn haunt her memories forever?
You can find out in the pages of The Captive.
