Interesting Words in Northern Ireland

Pictured above is the Police Service of Northern Ireland’s (NI) badge. Sergeant Shay Maguire’s badge in “Trapped.” Some interesting words spoken in NI are: “I didn’t just float up the Lagan in a bubble.” It means “I’m not stupid.” The Lagan is a river that flows through Belfast. “Off their trollies” means drunk. “Does my head in” means “It’s annoying.” A “stone,” their unit of weight, is equal to 14 pounds. I weigh 8.7 stones and a few pebbles. “Kip” can mean a nap. So you might take a cat kip. “Tea” can mean the beverage or dinner. “Crisp” are chips, but “chips” are French fries. Like fish and chips. Want a “biscuit”? That’s a cookie. Your “gob” is your mouth. “Shifting” is what you can do with your mouth—”kissing.” “Wee buns” are not to eat. It means “easy.” If you would like more please let me know.

  1. This is so fun. I love idioms. I just created a page on American idioms for my study guide, like “One card short of a full deck” means the same as “One fry short of a Happy Meal” today. LOL
